Ariel Pink: Toning Down the Weird

In a modern world filled with clones, rip-offs and sound-alikes, Ariel Pink, née Ariel Marcus Rosenberg, often finds himself standing alone as a true-blue original. The Los Angeles born and bred weirdo has crawled his way into the musical consciousness of many, first as a homebody recording fiend who dared to take his shambolic one-man wrecking show across the world’s road, then more recently as the fearless leader of his boss band, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti.

While Ariel Pink’s early fare was bizarrely listenable – at least for those who had the patience to filter out the pop beauty amidst the noise of collage, outer-space radio transmissions, shredding guitar and body percussion – Haunted Graffiti smoothes out the lower fidelities in favour of an electronic, rock, new-age groove. The band’s recently released debut Before Today has seen Pink jump labels from the indies (Paw Tracks) to the bigs (4AD), all the while keeping his visionary status intact and proving himself a musician ready for the challenge of bringing in new listeners.
