Montreal’s electronic preacher man gave us a thorough techno schooling in the early nineties – Solstice, Sona, DFA, Turbo, Neon – and yet he still remains pretty darn relevant almost 20 years later.
Perhaps the most compelling thing about our p’tit gars – other than his downright campy humour – is the dichotomy between those pounding tech DJ sets and his new wave-infused vocals on pop-friendly records (and their accompanying come-hither press shots!)
When I asked him last year whether he’d ever reconcile those two worlds (by singing some album tracks on tour?), he said: “If I work up the courage and I’m honest with myself, everything is building up towards going live, for example putting together a live band, because it’s natural. The DJing, I’ve done it and know it really well. There’s a line in the sand now that I should cross; it makes sense. But it’s hard to tell, you know?” What a tease.
