No one likes to wander far from home when it might take a team of sled dogs to get back at the end of the night. But it’s springtime now, so grab your bus pass and break out of that Plateau bubble way out. Club Ujo, an Afro-fusion boîte-à-danse on the border of TMR and Côte-des-Neiges, is the exact opposite of that Jeans Team show you endured last January, in that the hipster-douchebag quotient is nil. Besides, what does the average ironic t-shirt-wearing trustafarian know about Zouk or Compa? Music is pan-African – Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal and Ethiopia are all represented mixed with top 40 hip-hop and r & b to keep the tourists happy. Friday night is for the ladies (no cover before 1 a.m.) and Saturdays are free before midnight. Granted, the website is a little off-putting and amateurish (someone please hook these guys up with some decent design software), but if you
prefer slick veneers to actual substance, then stay below Saint-Zotique.
