Tired of clowns fronting like they’re all that? Do your dance battles always end in bitter disappointment? The Bzerk Squad is here to help and, for a nominal fee, you’ll achieve Ampness in no time.
Krump, which is actually an acronym for Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise, is a hyperkinetic street dance out of Los Angeles. The subject of director David LaChapelle’s documentary, Rize, krumping is a bona fide movement, to the point where Marge Simpson can arm swing like a pro.
To the untrained eye, krumping doesn’t appear to include much in the way of technique, but nothing could be further from the truth. «Believe it or not, there are basics to krumping,» explains Snaxx of the Bzerk Squad, Canada’s first Krump community. «A lot of people that see us dance, they don’t believe that krumping is really a style that comes from inside; what we give people is the tools to develop their own style.» Founded in 2004 by Pez, aka Big Bzerk, the Bzerk Squad’s approach to teaching krumping is uniquely their own. «If you look at what’s going on in LA and what’s going on here, we were definitely inspired by them. But we took that dance and added our own flavour; we didn’t try to copy anything. The whole program we developed is really customized and different.»
Some moves are standard: chest pops and stomps are key moves in any krumper’s repertoire, as is the ability to transfer from one element to the next. Once you get a lock on this, the next step is to understand the intensity of krump, which is the heart of the dance. «We teach it as an individual thing.»
The hardest part is its expressiveness emotional sincerity comes before technique, so leave those pesky inhibitions at the door. «If you don’t have the state of mind that goes with it, then your movements have no credibility. If you feel yourself, other people are going to feel you. It’s not an easy dance, but everybody can do it.»
