Critiques CD: Quasi | American Gong

You gotta love the vets of any musical scene and what they can bring to the game… patience, leadership, and a take-no-attitude ‘tude. The duo – and once-married – of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss have been kicking around for a few decades now (see Sleater Kinney, Heatmiser, Elliott Smith, and The Go-Betweens as proof positive). With eight records under their belt, Quasi don’t fuck around, keeping their rock bent, loud, and bold, light on special effects and doodads, as Coomes croons about nothing really with a big grin on his mug. Bass, drums, and guitar y’all. April 19th at Il Motore.

Critiques CD: Jason Collett | Rat A Tat Tat

Record number three holds the course, steady as she goes, for this member of Toronto’s elite songwriter’s circle. As with his previous dishes, Collett turns to his backing band – upstart young dudes and label-mates Zeus – for guidance, vision, and musical chops on a trip to fi ner pop music pastures, through leftfi elds of rock and boogie, country and folk tickled waltzes, bluesy zydecos, and tasteful oddities. A class act that stands far out from the great many pretenders, he further solidifi es his rank among the top tier of Canada’s troubadours. April 15th at Petit campus.
