Critiques CD: Autechre | Oversteps

Oversteps is atmospheric, majestic and monumental…a sort of IDM Vangelis or a Medieval Morricone. With fewer of the spindly, gangly and obtuse sonic shapes thrown by previous releases poking out the edges, Oversteps is surprisingly accessible (relatively speaking!). Autechre’s quintessential electro harpsichord flourishes and melodies carrying the day. Oversteps is still experimental and sure to perturb dull normals – it’s just that Autechre have taken it to yet the next level and it just happens to be slightly less angular and ambient up there. The pod bay doors are open Hal, go into the light and trip the fantastic.

Critiques CD: Bonobo | Black Sands

Purchasing the latest ‘‘chill out’’ compilation would be a highly effective avenue for getting ripped off. Another sure-fire proposition: the outstanding musical output of British producer/composer/DJ Bonobo, a.k.a. Simon Green. His fourth studio effort offers more of the downtempo master’s layered live instrumentation, deftly woven basslines and intricate sampling. Black Sands finds him dabbling in trip-hop, soul-jazz, even Brazilian rhythms. The LP is predominantly instrumental, with ethereal singer Andreya Triana joining him on three tracks (the beautiful, melancholy ‘‘We Could Forever’’). Her vocals, coupled with Green’s horns, bass and guitar, produce deeply affecting, powerful jams.
