On record number five, Matthew Cooper a.k.a. Eluvium eloquently reinvents his musical wheel. Long a master of a hushed wordless genre that straddles the composed and experimental genres, Cooper looks to new musical mediums for the proverbial shot-in-the-arm a decade into an esteemed career, namely vocals, percussion, and in his case the rarely used verse-chorus song structure. While Similes retains strains of a past organic/electronic blend – real, live instruments treated, processed, and beautifully stretched out to their fullest – the album’s eight tracks coalesce into a gorgeous song-cycle with his sad baritone serving as the super glue. May 21st at Casa del Popolo.
