Sextape Fridays. No, I’m not talking about a dirty night spent in but rather of what was recently voted Montreal’s second best club night in the Mirror. If you’ve been to one of Justin Adler and Alan Brinsmead’s popular Friday dance parties at the Blue Dog Motel, you know that they’re always character-themed (past titles have included Luke Skywalker, Celine Dion, Bill Nye and Dov Charney Sextape Fridays) and filled with plenty of sweat and bass.
I recently sat down with Adler to talk about how the night started, the duo’s musical beginnings and what’s to come for Nujax, the moniker they perform as together.
NIGHTLIFE: How did you and Alan Brinsmead meet and start the night?
Justin Adler: Alan and I were both DJs at Blue Dog, performing under the names Kid Legit (Brinsmead) and Girl Problems (Adler). We eventually met, hit it off and started playing Wednesday nights together in 2008. We were offered a gig on Fridays about a year and a half ago and decided to perform under Nujax. Every electro dance party you went to back then was so dark and serious, we both wanted to do a straight-up fun night.
How did it get to being called Sextape Fridays?
We were drunkenly trying to come up with a comical yet catchy title to the night and ended up with Lindsay Lohan Sextape Fridays, after deciding that Party ‘Til She’s Pregnant was a bit much. We didn’t want to offend Lohan if she were to find out a night was named after her, so we decided to switch it up every week.
That’s sweet of you. Any guidelines when creating the week’s theme?
Yes, nobody deceased. We will never do a Michael Jackson or Gary Coleman themed Sextape Friday. Also, nothing too prominent in the media. Funnily enough, we were going to do a Tiger Woods Sextape Friday two weeks before it actually could have been a Tiger Woods Sextape Friday. We vetoed that idea.
How long have you been producing music for?
We both produced under Kid Legit and Girl Problems. When we became Nujax, we started remixing (Major Lazer’s Zumbie) and putting out singles together (Beat Gon’ Boom), which got a lot of hype in the blogosphere. We’ll be releasing an album called Aya on Tracy Recordings on June 20th which features a newer sound for us.
What does the new album sound like?
Tribal! We drew a lot of influence from African and Arabic backgrounds. We’re trying to steer away from the traditional electro sound that Montreal’s seen a lot of and are aiming to put a fresh twist on dance music.
What’s in the future for Nujax?
We’re going on a three week tour across Spain and France at the end of July. Keep an eye out for a second album in the fall!
