Tuck Shop: giving foodies an excuse to tuck in

Observing a bowlful of gloriously fresh veggies literally falling off the shelves (or at least off the antique Frigidaire) at Tuck Shop, it’s no wonder that food people have been gossiping nonstop about this upscale but delightfully unpretentious restaurant.

Service is charming and friendly, with the whole staff operating as a team to make sure your every need is fulfilled. The dining room’s décor is modern with a country home feel: large common tables, wine crates and washboards adorning the walls, and sweet touches like cloth towels in the bathroom. As for the food? Every bite we ate was magic.

With a rotating menu according to what’s seasonally and locally available, there are specials that don’t even make it onto the chalkboard at the front of the restaurant. Dishes sampled included an entrée of salt cod fritters, spaghetti with wild shrimp, basil, poached field tomatoes and corn, and a leg of Kamouraska lamb with a stewed sauce of olives, roasted peppers, asparagus and rapini mixed in with gnocchi. My companion and I jealously spied on the dessert scene: crème brulée, strawberries and cream, homemade blueberry pie, and left mourning the physical impossibility of consuming dessert.
