Critiques CD: Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse | Dark Night of the Soul

Sadly, the stories surrounding the release of this collaborative effort – the two protagonists paired with a handful of singers as well as weirdo maestro David Lynch – greatly outweighs the generally bland pop-rock music heard inside. A legal dispute with EMI nearly shelved the album, while Sparkelhorse’s Mark Linkous’ subsequent suicide haunts the final product, itself an overall uneven affair that jumps through too many stylistic hoops to keep up any real momentum. Guests include Iggy Pop, The Flaming Lips, Black Francis, Vic Chesnutt (RIP) and Suzanne Vega.
