Critiques CD: Matthew Dear | Black City

Mr. Dear successfully melds pop and minimal techno in a way that many attempt but few get right. There’s nothing kitschy about Dear’s songs, they’re laid back and sincere, not ironic and bored. They’re emotive, not maudlin. Gentle, not soft. His deadpan, slightly melancholy vocals and seamless blend of techno and rock evoke Vancouver’s CircleSquare but Dear goes one blip further – he, and his music, are sleeker, less granola punk, more electro. With his incredibly contagious, minimalist blippity bleeps and beats, and his skilfully crafted melodies, Dear is becoming more and more like Peter Gabriel in his instinct for sophisticated, unique pop. October 18th at Le Belmont.
