Critiques CD: Grimes | Halfaxa
The beauty of this other-galaxy music lies in the innocence, charm and quirk of its prime protagonist, Claire Boucher, a.k.a. Grimes. Halfaxa is record number two for the young and gifted Montreal-based musician, hot on the cool heels of last year’s breakthrough Geidi Primes. Both discs are solid state examples of a DIY ethos and underground art mentality. Boucher’s voice holds center stage, a largely wordless and haunting choir that floats over and infuses her broken up beats and electronic experimental soundscapes. An inner soul exploration of outer pop music potentials, juxtaposing classical voice traditions and modern creations.
