French electro house producer (and film director) Quentin Dupleux hit the scene at the cusp of the millennium with the track “Flat Beat.” Dupleux started out his career directing Laurent Garnier’s video for “Flashback”and released his first EP on Laurent’s F Communications label.
Dupleux’s hyper-visual, zany performance-oriented musical style – and the “unlistenable” Moustache (Half a Scissor) album – was too much for FComm. The boisterous artist found a more comfortable fit with Ed Banger records, where he also met and started collaborating and producing Uffie.
Mr Oizo’s latest adventure – an EP done with Justice’s Gaspard Auge – is a soundtrack to a film Dupleux’s made called Rubber. The EP features a remix by Flying Lotus and the whole thing begs the question: is Mr Oizo France’s Björk? Is he a black swan or just an odd duck? Whatever he is, Mr Oizo is a strange bird.
