Get Nice Fridays: Celebrating a year of good vibes at Blizzarts
Crédit: Sébastien Roy

Morgan Steiker and DJ Cosmo, the brain trust behind Blizzarts’ popular weekly rap night, are no slouches when it comes to party promotion. From the start, they’ve worked hard to create a unique event, right down to handcrafting the massive signature light box that looms over the DJ booth. As anyone who has worked in the business can tell you, running a weekly event can be a tough haul. Many nights lose steam and fizzle out after a few months, but Steiker and Cosmo have found success by sticking with the vision they’ve had from the start (their motto: “No mics, no bottle service, no attitude”). In doing so, they have established a hip hop night for music fans who turn up weekly to hear classics both old and new spun solely by “DJs that have a certified quality level of party-rocking.”

What do you have in store for 2011?
M: Our goal for the year is to keep catering to our loyal clientele, which mostly consists of girls who love to dance and casual fans of rap music. We will not be reinventing the wheel, just fine-tuning it to perfection.

What rap song will never be played at Get Nice Fridays?
M: As long as someone raps on it, it can pretty much get played. If it was up to me, I’d say “Gangster’s Paradise” but you gotta ask the DJ.
C: Marky Mark’s “Good Vibrations”…oh we played that.

What has been your most memorable Friday in the last year?
C: Having Simahlak and DJ Fiend play. Simahlak was one of the first people I ever saw DJ hip hop and funk in Montreal. It was a blessing to have him at the night.
M: Yeah, and Fiend played an all vinyl ’80s-only set. Then Sim played only ’90s and Cosmo finished with the 2000s. Epic night.
