It’s always difficult for bands to recover after a smash-hit single. In Swedish trio Peter Bjorn and John’s case, they just haven’t been able to capture such an of-the-moment sound as they did with 2006’s “Young Folks,” their earnest breakthrough played everywhere ad nauseum. Their latest effort, Gimme Some, is more rock than trendy-pop this time, and notably lacks the air of optimistic-cool that launched them into the collective consciousness. Beyond the requisite comparisons to their previous hit, Gimme Some is hit-or-miss throughout – some songs try too hard or verge on cheesy while others are fine, but uninspiring.
