Vic Market: gourmet health cafe does hot vegan lunches, catered meals and coffee breaks

To some (those who opened the Vic Market, for example), the words “gourmet health cafe” have always belonged together. If, however, the idea does not immediately entice you, don’t worry – this new cafe / lunch spot / catering service / organic boutique stresses the gourmet at least as much as the health. The coffee is good and the whole wheat dark chocolate pecan cookie is better.

Operating out of a new spa and health club complex, the Vic Market offers Westmounters ethical food in a stylish ambiance. With a portion of the room devoted to groceries, two big counters and only a handful of tables, the space is clearly designed for coffees and (largely takeout) lunches, though their catering menu offers the option to rent the venue out as well. The room’s division into a sandwich and hot food station, and a coffee and cashier’s station ensure service at the Vic Market is streamlined.

There is a vast array of vegan-friendly, gluten-free, and dairy-conscious options on the menu. What’s nice about the place is that they’re not just interested in offering organic or vegan or gluten-free options – they’re also supporting ethical commerce locally. Sandwiches are served on organic breads from Arhoma, an Hochelaga bakery (I tried one with grain-fed chicken, toasted almonds, apricots and a thyme-honey yogurt sauce, paired with a tasty sesame coleslaw) and fair trade coffee, also available in whole bean form, is sourced from Montreal roastery Toi, Moi et Café. The Vic Market helps you feel good about the food you eat.
