‘Vince’ exhibit at the Belgo: exploring human fragility with a few glances

During the month of June, the walls of Massarelli Gallery will be taken over by the unusual characters of young Montrealer Vincent Beauchemin, also known as Vince. The 32-year-old artist has been drawing since he was an teen and has acquired the unique skill to portray people around him in an almost melancholic and otherworldly manner.

Vince has a knack for rapidly sketching out the interesting faces he comes across before they become distant memories. In little time, Vincent captures their expressiveness and their essence, leaving out merely one detail: their mouth.  “My characters do not have mouths, so that they are not easily recognized. They also don’t have a mouth so that the audience may seek to identify the character’s emotion elsewhere in their face. Why would I give them a mouth if they can’t speak anyway?” the young artist explained at an interview.

Soon after finishing his bachelor in Visual Arts at UQAM, Vince’s ingenious style quickly proved to be a gift, as offers to exhibit his work on the international arena began to pour in. So far, Vince’s work has been exhibited in some of the most cosmopolitan cities around the world, among them Istanbul, New York, Paris, Amsterdam and Shanghai. Nonetheless, Vince’s inspiration continues to reside in Montreal, where he has his own studio and which he will always consider home.

His latest exhibition at Massarelli Gallery entitled Solo au Belgo offers
a collection of Vince’s best pieces, starting today and followed by an exclusive vernissage next Friday the 10th at 5 p.m.
