Spanish Moss and Total Loss is a charming album that wanders around the smoother end of contemporary retro synth music…there’s some Badalementi in the Air, and a definite mellowing of the punkier raucousness of their previous albums. While highly likable and new ground for Shout Out Out Out Out, this is in many ways familiar territory. The songs are pretty pop and use the warm aesthetic of retro synth and vocoder to conjure a naïve, hypnotic nostalgia. The whole album is quiet lovely and well constructed but, because they’re following such a well worn path, a placid monotony sets in making this an enjoyable but not particularly exciting listen.
