You know when half the audience is looking at the floor shaking their butts in the air that you aren't at any plain old hip-hop show! Known to her legion of fans as the Queen Diva of Bounce music, Big Freedia has already ruled the stage in the 514 with live shows that became a literal booty battlefield for queers and other ass-lovers.
Freedia's 2010 Azz Everywhere and follow-up Y'all Get Back Now catapulted her underground hip-hop sound from the New Orleans dance-hall scene to the international stage – attracting the attention of recent collaborators Diplo and RuPaul. A party queen with a poet's soul, you'll see her soon in a feature-length documentary, Almost Famous, which was just screened at the Zurich Film Festival.
For her Montréal show, Freedia will be throwing down songs from her forthcoming album, Da Idol, which will feature the boxing-themed video and single “Step into the Ring” (as yet unreleased). “You’re gonna see a lot of versatile stuff coming from me,” she told us, adding that the new tracks rule both as spoken word and as party music. She's called the Queen for a reason, so bend over and get to work!
