Burgundy Lion – Whisky Tasting 🥃🦁🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🔅Balvenie 21 – Portwood Finish 🔅Douglas Laing – Aberlour 25 🔅Douglas Laing – Arran 21 🔅Octomore 10 year old I reserved a pre-game whisky tasting for my husband’s birthday (Go Habs!) and this well exceeded my expectations. All four of these whiskies are absolutely delicious. The Burgundy Lion has a ridiculous selection of single malts ranging from the most popular to the most rare. Toby guided us through four special single malts. We started with the Balvenie 21 and the fruity sweetness from Port finish was absolutely lovely. It set a high standard for the evening. Our second whisky was the Aberlour 25 single cask from Douglas Laing’s Executive Decision line. There were only 88 of these ever bottled and that’s a shame. On the nose, this may be the best whisky I have ever smelled. It was my husband’s favourite of the evening. This whisky is the epitome of smooth. Next, we moved to the Arran 21 from Douglas Laing’s Old Particular line. This is a lovely whisky with a beatiful saltiness underlying a distinctive palate. Last, we moved to the Octomore 10. I love peat, so this is an easy sell for me. This is my second Octomore ever and I was surprised just how different it was. Compared to the 10.1 it has just as much smoke but more complexity. The smoke, while immediately obvious, takes a back seat to the rich fruit and pepper. This was my favourite of the evening. This was a wonderful experience. If you don’t have a whisky collection worth tens of thousands of dollars but, for one evening want to pretend that you do, grab some friends and organize a whisky tasting. Normally they require large groups but, due to the pandemic, more intimate groups are possible. Thank you Toby! We won’t forget this experience!
