Glass Candy: sweet tooth for synth

Portland-based Glass Candy have been sharing hushed synth sweets since 1996, running the gamut from new wave coos to disco-punk murmurs. They’ve been anointed musical darlings of the fashion world (thanks, Karl Lagerfeld) and their nocturnal italo-disco gave way to a bustling sub-genre (The XX, Nite Jewel).

So you can imagine the collective shock when vocalist Ida No and guitarist/producer Johnny Jewel released their first-ever music video for Feeling Without Touching two months ago. Smoky hues, foggy silhouettes and Ida’s high energy hops and hip sways prompted the inevitable question: why had they waited so long? It’s all part of the duo’s master plan – namely, not to have one, to avoid putting out contrived material that reeks of manufactured stench.

Same goes for turning down the bourgeois indie gangbang that is Coachella thrice prior to finally agreeing to it last year. Here’s hoping their upcoming LP Body Work offers more of their sovereign disco seduction.
