MUTEK: 16 bonnes raisons d’avoir hâte

Après avoir fêté sa première décennie en grand l’an dernier, l’un des festivals les plus pointus et imprévisibles de la ville se ramène pour sa onzième édition, du 2 au 6 juin. Au-delà des noms inconnus, des découvertes potentielles et des descriptions étranges, il y a plein de raisons d’avoir hâte à ces cinq jours d’art numérique. En voici seize.
 

1. Découvrir la relève locale
C’est le moment de les attraper tous en même temps: l’excellent combo Citofono (en photo), des mordus de vieux synthés vintage qui mêlent krautrock et ambiances abstraites; Alex Moskos (membre du trio psychésynthétique Unireverse) en escapade solo; Dominique Pétrin (anciennement des Georges Leningrad) qui prend enfin son envol; le duo de Québec Low End Ensemble, dont les expérimentations jouent précisément dans le registre décrit dans son nom… Et tant d’autres. 2. To mingle with artists and music geeks from around the world
Mutek isn’t just a music festival; it’s a community building device that brings together creators and music biz types to check the state of the electronic nation and share views. From formal talks and workshops to simply hanging at the bar, Mutek is the best place for odd conversations with interesting strangers. (LC)

3. Le garden party de Señor Coconut
Pour la première fois de son histoire, MUTEK aura cette année un événement extérieur: l’Allemand Uwe Schmidt, alias Señor Coconut, prend d’assaut la place des festivals avec son orchestre pour servir ses reprises de tubes connus et pointus à la sauce latine! (OL)

4. To see what a warped piano prodigy does with knobs and strings…
It’s worth getting to Metropolis early in the evening to soak up the widescreen sounds of UK piano prodigy and knob twiddler Jon Hopkins. Hopkin’s Insides was a standout album of 2009 and his filmic electronic symphonies beg for immersion. Plus he’s opening for Mouse on Mars. (LC)

5. Le retour des enfants prodigues
Les Tim Hecker, Stephen Beaupré et autres Guillaume and the Coutu-Dumonts sont des petits gars bien de chez nous, mais ils montent sur les planches locales plus rarement encore que Céline Dion. OK, les deux derniers ont de bonnes raisons, puisqu’ils habitent maintenant en Allemagne, mais bon. Tout ça pour dire que MUTEK est capable d’en faire ressortir plus d’un de son terrier. (OL)

6. Une soirée caliente avec Cómeme
Pas besoin de shaker des maracas en chantant «ay ay ay» pour affirmer ses origines latino-américaines. Figure de proue de la nouvelle scène électronique de l’hémisphère sud, Matias Aguayo le fait à travers une musique inventive, mélodique et bien orchestrée, qui dégage toute la chaleur de ce coin du monde. Dans la foulée de son album chez Kompakt, l’Argentin démarrait dernièrement Cómeme, un nouveau label qu’il vient nous présenter en compagnie de deux de ses recrues, Diegors et Rebolledo. (OL)

7. To feast on some of the finest in house music while munching on Merguez and working on your tan
The final MUTEK Piknic of the season has lots to hoist you up to cloud nine. For one, there are the Canadian debuts of Amsterdam’s San Proper, with his titillating and twisted deep house rhythms, and France’s Pépé Bradock, who peppers his spacey house with jazz and funk flourishes, plus America’s own Dave Aju (pictured). Don’t fret if the sun doesn’t shine; remember last year’s rapturous Villalobos set as the umbrellas went up? Rain or shine, this is your chance to leave blood, sweat and tears around that strange-looking statue. (MOH)

8. To figure out what those weird noises are….Matmos
After Mathew Herbert, one of the most fun electronic outfits to see live, due to their performative visual element. Like mad scientists, Matmos are always concocting something new and bizarre – their experiments explore the arcane and the cutting edge with clever creativity, from banks of vintage synths to medieval instruments and surgical procedures. 9. To hear some of the most gifted tech producers out there – like Sweden’s Minilogue – go at it live
We’ve had ample time to digest this feverish duo’s expansive LP Animals, which covered so much sonic ground, you’d think they were making up for a lifetime of shameless trance perversions. Mark your calendar for their inaugural North American live set, which will most certainly deliver startling tempo shifts, beaming moments of techno alfresco and even, just maybe, a few filthy trance delights. 10. Le dub électronique persiste et signe
Du dubstep bien lourd et gras au dubtronique délicat hérité de Pole et de ses consorts, les mélanges entre musiques jamaïcaine et électronique continuent de faire des petits. Soirée de variations sur un même thème en compagnie des Anglais de Demdlike Stare, King Midas Sound et Ikonika ainsi que des Canadiens exilés en Allemagne (mais qu’est-ce qu’ils ont tous, ma parole?) d’Overcast Sound. 11. Because Monument-National will play host to layered instrumental masters such as Germany’s Marsen Jules
Call him an appropriately dense composer, an ethereal sound architect or a poet of ambient textures. But none of those titles will do justice to Marsen Jules’ evocative live performances, pairing subtly complex orchestration with projected eye candy without ever indulging in pompous academic posturings. 12. To take in office printer symphonies
There are those who glance at their 10-pages-per-minute printing relics and immediately think of garbage day. And then there is [THE USER], who saw in their obsolete Epson FX 286e, Panasonic KX-P1124i and Fujitsu DL 3400 the potential for ambient noise symphonies conducted by a network server. A guaranteed hit with bespectacled out-of-town geeks and those left permanently scarred by the shrieking sounds of office hardware. (MOH)

13. La visite de Nurse With Wound
Absents de la scène pendant plus de 20 ans, ces pionniers britanniques de la musique électronique, qui ont touché autant au noise qu’à l’ambient, n’ont repris du service qu’il y a quelques années. Steven Stapleton demeure le seul membre fondateur à bord. Les machines mises au service de l’humour absurde et du surréalisme dada. (OL)

14. Where else will you find some of our most adventurous talents throwing themselves into the unknown?
There’s a reason why 56% of attendees at last year’s fest were out-of-province MUTEK heads and it wasn’t just to see Detroit’s godfather of techno Carl Craig command Metropolis’ dancing masses. It’s also for MUTEK’s long-standing exploratory series Ectoplasmes, wherein a slew of avant-garde musicians (like Bernardino Femminielli, pictured) operating in different sonic realms are paired together for unprecedented performances in the spirit of spontaneity. 15. La comédie d’Actress
À ne pas confondre avec le groupe pop-rock. Cet Actress-ci est l’alias du Britannique Darren Cunningham, dont les brassages mystérieux se retrouvent quelque part entre le techno minimal, le dubstep et le glitch. Récemment recruté par le label Honest Jon de Damon Albarn (Gorillaz), Cunningham lance ce mois-ci Splazsh, un second album attendu après l’excellent Hazyville de 2008.

16. To dance what’s left of your ass off
…at the closing party with Von Oswald Trio (Moritz Von Oswald of Basic Channel, Vladislav Delay, Max Loderbauer). The trio started out as a live act and include a Fender Rhodes, steel drums and, of course, synths. VOT’s freeform dub abstraction is the perfect outro to celebrate the beginning of the end of the total immersion in electronic music in the company of fellow geeks. The final night is seen off by Theo Parrish (pictured). Leaving the dancefloor will be difficult. (LC)
