Critiques CD: Phosphorescent | Here’s to Taking it Easy

The long-standing project that Matthew Houck has built around himself over the course of four records, continue their country mojo that was showcased on last year’s cool Willie Nelson cover disc. Instead of relying solely on a dark and lonely western vibe – which does pop up on a number or two – they turn to a big-band rock sound with horns, slide guitar, group vocals and bar-room piano. Check out the rollicking opener ‘It’s Hard to be Humble…’ for full evidence. The album sticks largely to this format, but heeds to the previously heard indie and alternative pop/folk sounds, as well as a lazy, hazy, hot sun pacing.
