Warpaint: There’s no turning back for the Los Angeles quartet

Firmly ensconced on the inner fringes of a cooler and cooler Los Angeles underground music happening where starlets and wannabes hover, Warpaint’s beginnings date back seven-odd years to when the all-lady band cemented their childhood friendships with a song.

Relying on four voices, two guitars and an icy rhythm section, the band found early supporters in a number of bigger names, most importantly John Frusciante, ex of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who produced, mixed and mastered their ear-catching debut EP, 2008’s Exquisite Corpse.

Warpaint’s music floats dreamily through a harmonic haze of crystal melody, booted by grooved bass lines, subtle six-string jostling, electronic touches and rolling beats, all of which are clearly showcased on last year’s hyped debut full-length. Brought to the masses by the famed international imprint Rough Trade, The Fool established the band as one to watch and exploded their exposure internationally. It’s too late. The dam has burst.
