Scream 4 and Neve Campbell: a new generation rocks the Ghostface masks!

In the mid-nineties, Wes Craven’s Scream trilogy reinvigorated the dwindling (read: barely even registering on box-office charts) horror genre with its fresh spin on the slasher film, making it relevant to a new generation of moviegoers with its savvy, film-schooled characters, a script that nailed the zeitgeist of 90s teens with bang-on pop culture references and a cast and crew that operated tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Some 11 years after Scream 3 frankly underwhelmed fans of ever-earnest survivor Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), ever-clumsy officer Dewey (David Arquette) and ever-bitchface reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), the Woodsboro gang is back with a new instalment in the series, hitting theatres today!

Look out for NIGHTLIFE’s interview with Canadian actress Neve Campbell in our May issue, but in the meantime, here’s what she had to say when we asked her if she had an extensive knowledge of horror movie history. A legit question, given that she’s kind of our generation’s Jamie Lee Curtis…

Neve Campbell: "To be honest, the first horror movie I ever saw, I think I was thirteen at the time, I was at a slumber party. It was The Changeling with George C. Scott, and it’s a really terrifying film. A lot of people haven’t seen it but horror buffs will say it’s one of the scariest movies he ever made, and because of that, I didn’t watch a horror film at all after that!

It actually wasn’t until the second Scream that Jada Pinkett-Smith had heard that I had never seen any of Wes’ films, and got mad at me and bought me a bunch of films! (laughs)"
