Grimes: intriguing local artist keeps churning them out
One of the most intriguing artists to emerge from ici in the last two years is the young Claire Boucher.

Adopting the moniker Grimes, and with very little formal music education, she broke out as part of the first wave of musicians associated with the very cool Montreal pop label Arbutus, alongside the likes of Silly Kissers, Tonstartssbandht, Sean Nicholas Savage and Pop Winds.

Her two records, Geidi Primes and last year’s Halfaxa, introduced us to something different and something new, sounds that floated wistfully through variant styles of beats and electronics, a journey through the seemingly discordant worlds of dance, hip-hop, industrial, experimental and goth anchored by an eerie, wordless siren’s call.

Further cementing Grimes’ singular take on the medium of popular song in a modern world is her new split release with electro-prankster D’Eon, five tracks on which she aims strictly for the dancefloor, albeit a “piste” of the interstellar variety.
