Critiques CD: Guillaume and the Coutu-Dumonts | Breaking the Fourth Wall

Breaking The Fourth Wall starts out sounding like a pretty standard mix of house and techno before it careens wildly off into the leftfield. Sparse, funky and vaguely disconcerting, “On The Lips” starts the album’s elliptical path. Then “Intermede” comes on like Pink Floyd playing acid jazz at the end of the universe. “Discothèque” brings back the 4/4 but the instrumental twists disco into trippy shapes anchored in outer space by psychedelic sax and abstract guitar. “Unwelcome” sparkles with the kind of beautiful fractures, recursive melodies and obtuse angles that make this album so exceptional and gorgeous to dive into. June 5th at Metropolis.
