Critiques CD: Ratatat | LP4

A follow-up to LP3, Ratatat offer up more songs recorded in the same session as their previous album. But it’s not just the missing half of a disjointed double album, Ratatat have augmented the original sessions with an orchestral session recorded later and take off in some new directions. In fact, they’re all over the place. Their big electronic pop-rocking dance sound remains on many tracks and there’s plenty of kitschy tribal weirdness and funk, like the catchy, funky mess of “Neckbrace” and psychedelic esoterica of “Bob Gandhi”. There’s lots of fun to be had here but sometimes you wish they’d left out the kitchen sink.
